BRAINY RIDDLES TIME~~~

1. I buy myself a specimen of Jackoweevles and put it in a Petri dish at 4 o'clock. Every creature divides into two creatures each minute, and 47 minutes later I notice the Petri dish is half full. I glance at the clock when the Petri dish is full- what time is it?

2. Hermione wants to take the ship to Japan to visit a Kappa- a ladder is hanging on the side of the ship. The bottom rung is touching the water. In the ship manual that she managed to dig up, she reads that the length of the ladder is 2m40 and that the distance between the rungs is 30cm. The tide rises 27.3cm each hour. How many hours must Hermione wait to cast a charm that requires the water to reach the 7nth rung of the ladder?

3. A group of 98 aurors suffered the following injuries in a battle: 85 lost an eye due to a Bat-Bogey Hex, 75 broke their back, 70 lost one Finger (à la Peter Pettigrew), and 80 lost an arm because of blast-ended skrewts. What is the minimum number of aurors who must have lost all 4?

5. I've got seven Remembralls in a basket and meet seven forgetful children. I want to give each child a Rememberall but still have a Rememberall in the basket- how do I divide the Rememberalls among the children?

Boggle: Words are formed by the use of adjoining letters. Letters must join in the proper sequence to spell a word. They may join horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, to the left, right or up and down. But no one cube letter can be used more than once within a single word! For more information, check this site under "PLAYING:".

What to do: There are 16 names (the given name or the family name) of people who were once or still are in Hogwarts. Submit a list of the names you've found (boggle images not necessary).

Tips: There is one creature, and one dead person in the grid, as well as a person who teased a Ravenclaw Ghost. Also, there's a Slytherin Quidditch Seeker, eight D.A. members, a family member of a D.A. member and three teachers in the grid as well.

Participation points: 10 pts. You must find twelve of the sixteen to qualify for points.

Deadline: Thursday 11th June Midnight EST.

Rules: Fill-a-Pix is a Minesweeper-like puzzle based on a grid with a pixilated picture hidden inside. Each number indicates how many of the squares immediately surrounding it, and itself (!), will be filled.

Tips: Use two colours to fill out the grid, one colour for the blank squares, and one colour for the filled squares. Fill out 0's and 9's already, as well as 6's on the sides and 4's in the corners. Here's an example. Don't forget to sign with your name and house!

Writer Signups

Please use the textbox at the bottom of the post to register interest in writing for the Daily Prophet.

• You must list three positions in order of preference - specifying positions means that you're more likely to be contacted first when those positions become available.


• If you don't specify, then you'll only be contacted if we can't find someone who has shown direct interest in that position. In this case positions will be offered on a first come first serve basis to members already on the list.


• If no one takes the position, it will be advertised to the wider comm via The Daily Prophet.

The idea is to make sure that everyone who WANTS to write for the Daily Prophet, CAN write for the Daily Prophet - you don't have to stay glued to the computer in case a position becomes available, we'll come straight to you :)

Positions and their duties

Copy Editor
Copy editor is the person who proof reads each of the columns before they're sent to publish. You'll need to check for spelling mistakes, test links and try to make sure all the columns share similar formatting. Copy Editor is given a full 24 hours between the writers deadline and the DP issue date to do this, but you can start proofing columns as soon as they're submitted by the writers if you want.

Slytherin Correspondent
House correspondents report on what's been happening in their common rooms; you can write about in-house activities, social posts, new members, or just use the space to crow about your houses's recent successes around HiH if you like.

Writing Spotlight
Fanart Spotlight
These writer's scour the HiH comms, looking for the best peices of fiction and fanart to showcase in the Prophet. Usually writers choose to pick one or two artists/fanficcers to spotlight per issue, but how you do it is up to you. You should include the icon challenge comms if you're writing for fanart.

St.Mungos Correspondent

These correspondents report specifically on their respective comms. Clubs Correspondent might write a roundup of outcomes of various club activities, whereas the Quidditch/Hogsmeade correspondent might report on recent quidditch scores.

Our regular Agony Uncle column. In charge of writing in, or responding to, member's questions. One member will act as Dumbles, whilst another will create questions for him to answer (for issues where we don't have a member question available - which is usually pretty much all of them :( )

Quizmaster
Create and organise a wordsearch, crossword, sudoku puzzle or similar for each DP Issue. You'll need to provide me with an answer key each week so I can check the winners.
