Last Issues Answers & Participation

Answer Key:
1. 4 boys, 3 girls in the family:

The number of boys is b+1, the number of girls is g+1. The boy has B brothers and G+1 sisters. The girl has G sisters and B+1 brothers.

The girl has twice as many brothers as sisters:
B+1 = 2G (i)

The boy has the same number of each:
B = g+ 1 (ii)

Combining the two (ii in i) gives G+2 = 2G.
G = 2, the number of girls then is G+1 = 3
thus B = 3, B+1=4.

2. Microphone

3. 0. There are 3 yellow socks and 1 purple sock! (Otherwise the chances of getting a yellow pair wouldn't be 1/2.)

RIDDLES

1. "I have as many brothers as sisters," says Mundungus Fletcher to his sister Margaret. "That's nothing!", says she, "I have twice as many brothers as sisters."
How many brothers and sisters are there?

2. Mr. Weasley walks into a music shop and starts perusing the Chopin section. "I shall have to buy some Muggle music!", he sighs blissfully. He looks around the shop and sees something. With amusement he realises that this one word could be formed by rearranging the letters of the phrase MORE CHOPIN.
What is it?

3. Each morning Dobby takes his socks out of the cupboard separately. He was down to his last four socks which were either bright purple or mustard yellow. He knows that the chances of his picking a random pair of mustard yellow socks are 0.5 - what are his chances of choosing a bright purple pair of socks?

Writer Signups

Please use the textbox at the bottom of the post to register interest in writing for the Daily Prophet.

Positions and their duties

Copy Editor
Copy editor is the person who proof reads each of the columns before they're sent to publish. You'll need to check for spelling mistakes, test links and try to make sure all the columns share similar formatting. Copy Editor is given a full 24 hours between the writers deadline and the DP issue date to do this, but you can start proofing columns as soon as they're submitted by the writers if you want.

Gryffindor Correspondent
Hufflepuff Correspondent
Ravenclaw Correspondent
Slytherin Correspondent

House correspondents report on what's been happening in their common rooms; you can write about in-house activities, social posts, new members, or just use the space to crow about your houses's recent successes around HiH if you like.

Ask Dumbledore (Two positions, please specify)
Our regular Agony Uncle column. In charge of writing in, or responding to, member's questions. One member will act as Dumbles, whilst another will create questions for him to answer (for issues where we don't have a member question available - which is usually pretty much all of them :( )

Quizmaster
Create and organise a wordsearch, crossword, sudoku puzzle or similar for each DP Issue. You'll need to provide me with an answer key each week so I can check the winners.

Sign up using the textbox below. All comments are screened.

Once you're signed up here, we'll keep you in mind for the whole term. Just because you don't get the position now doesn't mean you wont get it later - in fact last term almost everyone signed up here got offered some form of position before the end of the term!

"Brilliant,” said Hermione. “This isn’t magic — it’s logic — a puzzle. A lot of the greatest wizards haven’t got an ounce of logic, they’d be stuck in here forever.”

Logic Puzzle
Oh no! Hagrid lost the summer camp notes!

Hagrid stares at the four Hogwarts Houses, and back to the row of holiday houses numbered 1-4 with red, yellow, blue and green as colours. The Mandrakes are crying, and Hagrid wasn't sure if the Devil's Snare already ate someone. The pixies were fluttering around annoying everyone, and the Nifflers were annoying the Jarveys. The Kappas meanwhile were gnawing on the Gillyweed. And Colin Creevey ate too many Alihotsy leaves- again.

The caretaker, a deaf old man, merely shouts:
"ARRR, the Niffler lives directly left of the yellow house. The Jarvey-owning inhabitants live directly to the right of the people who study Mandrakes. Two Houses lie between the house where people plant Alihotsy leaves and the green house. The people who grow the Devil's Snare live directly right to the blue house. One house lies between the Hufflepuff house and the Jarvey-owning inhabitants on the right. There are two houses between the Slytherins and the Kappas. Yeh decided to not put any Houses in their House coloured hut. And don't forget, the Gryffindors own the Nifflers! ARRRR GET THIS DEVIL'S SNARE OFF OF ME."

The two new clues can be seen in bold above. Can you help poor Hagrid assign a House to a coloured holiday house, with their assigned pet and plants according to plan?

Boggle: Words are formed by the use of adjoining letters. Letters must join in the proper sequence to spell a word. They may join horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, to the left, right or up and down. But no one cube letter can be used more than once within a single word! For more information, check this site under "PLAYING:".

What to do: There are 16 names (the given name or the family name) of people who were once or still are in Hogwarts. Submit a list of the names you've found (boggle images not necessary).

Tips: There is one creature, and one dead person in the grid, as well as a person who teased a Ravenclaw Ghost. Also, there's a Slytherin Quidditch Seeker, eight D.A. members, a family member of a D.A. member and three teachers in the grid as well.

Participation points: 10 pts. You must find twelve of the sixteen to qualify for points.

Rules: Fill-a-Pix is a Minesweeper-like puzzle based on a grid with a pixilated picture hidden inside. Each number indicates how many of the squares immediately surrounding it, and itself (!), will be filled.

Tips: Use two colours to fill out the grid, one colour for the blank squares, and one colour for the filled squares. Fill out 0's and 9's already, as well as 6's on the sides and 4's in the corners. Here's an example. Don't forget to sign with your name and house!
